Professional HiSET Exam Prep and Coaching Online for Adults Across the USA

Everything adults need to know about the five HiSET subtests, the passing rules, and how 1:1 HiSET coaching helps students in Chicago, Charlotte, Baltimore and beyond.

The HiSET is a respected path to a high school equivalency credential. It can unlock jobs, college admission, military enlistment and training programs. However, preparing for five separate subtests can feel overwhelming, especially for working adults. That is where professional HiSET exam prep comes in. At Prep Exams, we coach adults one-on-one, entirely online. Moreover, we work with students in every state that offers the HiSET.

In this guide, you will learn what the HiSET covers, how scoring works and how our coaching helps you pass. In addition, we explain our seven HiSET services and the cities where we help students most. If your state uses the GED instead, read our guide to hiring a private GED tutor online.

What Is the HiSET?

HiSET stands for High School Equivalency Test. Several states use it, either on its own or alongside the GED. Your state's adult education office decides which tests are available. Therefore, always check your state's rules before you start preparing.

The HiSET has five subtests. Language Arts Reading tests your understanding of literary and informational passages. Language Arts Writing includes multiple-choice questions on grammar and organization, plus an essay. Mathematics covers numbers, measurement, geometry, data and algebra. Science covers life science, physical science and Earth science. Finally, Social Studies covers history, civics, government, economics and geography.

You can usually take the subtests one at a time. As a result, you can pass one, rest and then move on. Most adults find this approach far less stressful.

How HiSET Scoring Works

Understanding scoring helps you plan. Each subtest is scored on a scale from 1 to 20. In general, you need at least 8 on each subtest. In addition, you need at least 2 out of 6 on the essay. Finally, your five scores must add up to at least 45.

That last rule matters a lot. For example, if you score exactly 8 on all five subtests, your total is only 40. That is not enough. Therefore, you need to score higher than 8 on at least some subtests. Our tutors plan for this from the start.

A smart strategy is to build a buffer in your strongest subjects. For instance, if reading is your strength, aim for a 12 or 13 there. That cushion takes pressure off math or science. Consequently, your overall path to 45 becomes much easier.

Why HiSET Coaching Makes a Difference

Many adults try to prepare alone with a book or free videos. That can work. However, most people get stuck on one or two subjects. A coach removes those roadblocks quickly.

First, a coach finds the fastest route to a passing total. They look at your diagnostic scores and decide which subtests to take first. Second, a coach explains topics clearly, using real-life examples. For example, percentages make more sense when you calculate a paycheck deduction.

Third, a coach keeps you moving. Life gets busy. Without a plan, weeks can slip by. A weekly session gives you structure and momentum. In fact, consistency is the biggest predictor of success we see.

Our HiSET Exam Prep Services in Chicago, Charlotte, Baltimore and Nationwide

We offer seven HiSET services. You can choose just one or combine them. Each starts with a short diagnostic, so your time goes where it counts.

1. Private 1:1 HiSET Coaching

This is our core service. You meet your coach each week over live video, and you can add extra hours whenever you need them. Your coach uses a shared whiteboard, so you can see every step.

Each session follows a written plan built from your diagnostic. Additionally, you receive short practice sets between sessions. Most adults schedule sessions in the evening or on weekends.

Students in Chicago often choose this service. Many of them study after long shifts. Our coaches adjust the pace to fit their energy and schedule.

2. HiSET Language Arts Reading Coaching

The reading subtest uses passages from fiction, nonfiction and informational texts. You answer questions about main ideas, details, word meaning and author purpose. Many adults are stronger readers than they think. However, the timing can catch them off guard.

Our coaches teach a simple reading routine. First, preview the questions. Next, read the passage with a purpose. Then, eliminate wrong answers before choosing. As a result, accuracy and speed both improve.

3. HiSET Language Arts Writing and Essay Help

The writing subtest has two parts. First, multiple-choice questions test grammar, usage and organization. Second, you write an essay in response to a prompt. The essay needs a clear position, solid support and logical structure.

Our coaches give you a reliable essay template. You practice it several times with feedback. For instance, you will learn how to write a strong opening sentence and connect each paragraph to your main idea. Students in Texas and Illinois often book this service.

4. HiSET Math Tutoring

Math is where many adults feel the most anxiety. Some have not done algebra in decades. That is normal. Our math tutors start with fractions, decimals and percentages. Then they build up to equations, geometry and data analysis.

You will practice the exact question styles you will see. Furthermore, you will learn when to estimate and when to calculate. Consequently, you save time and avoid careless errors. Adults in Michigan and Wisconsin request HiSET math help often.

5. HiSET Science Exam Coaching

The science subtest tests reasoning more than memorization. You will read charts, interpret experiments and draw conclusions. Therefore, the key skill is reading scientific information carefully.

Your coach teaches you to identify variables, controls and conclusions. Likewise, you practice reading graphs and data tables quickly. Students in Illinois and Tennessee often book science coaching after finishing reading and writing.

6. HiSET Social Studies Coaching

Social studies covers US history, civics, government, economics and geography. Much like science, it rewards careful reading. You will interpret maps, timelines, primary sources and graphs.

Our coaches review key events and documents without overwhelming you. For example, you will learn the basic structure of the federal government and the main ideas of the Constitution. Meanwhile, you practice applying that knowledge to new passages.

7. Fast-Track and Retake HiSET Preparation

Sometimes you need your credential quickly. Perhaps a job or enrollment deadline is close. In that case, our fast-track plan targets the subtests closest to passing. Most fast-track students choose the Intensive plan, with daily coach check-ins and short timed drills.

If you have already tested and fell short, our retake coaching starts with your score report. Your coach looks for the skills that cost you points. Then they build a short, focused plan. Often, a few weeks of targeted work is enough.

HiSET Coaching in Major Cities and States

All of our coaching is online. Still, rules vary by state. Fees, minimum age and retake waiting periods depend on where you live. Our coaches understand these differences. Here are the regions where adults book HiSET coaching most often.

Illinois, Michigan and Wisconsin

We work with many adults in Chicago, Detroit and Milwaukee. In Chicago, students often study on the L during their commute. That is why we send short, phone-friendly practice sets. Similarly, students in Grand Rapids use weekend sessions.

North Carolina, Tennessee and Kentucky

Adults in Charlotte, Raleigh, Nashville and Louisville book HiSET coaching regularly. Many balance work in logistics, healthcare or hospitality. Our evening sessions fit those schedules. See more on our North Carolina page.

Maryland and the Mid-Atlantic

In Baltimore, many adults study for the HiSET while working full time near the Inner Harbor or in the city's large hospital systems. Our coaches offer early-morning and late-evening sessions. Additionally, we support students across Maryland and New York.

The West: Nevada, Utah, Idaho and California

We coach adults in Las Vegas, Salt Lake City and across Idaho. In Las Vegas, many students work late shifts on or near the Strip. Therefore, we schedule sessions at unusual hours when needed. We also help adults in Long Beach and across California who are comparing their test options.

The Plains and the South

Adults in Kansas, Mississippi and Arizona also use our HiSET coaching. In Wichita, for example, many students study around shifts in aviation manufacturing. Our flexible scheduling makes that possible.

New England

We also support adults in Maine and the wider Northeast. In rural areas, adult education centers can be a long drive away. Online coaching removes that barrier entirely.

How We Build Your HiSET Study Plan

Every plan follows four steps. First, you take a short diagnostic in all five subjects. Second, your coach maps your scores against the passing rules. Together, you decide which subtests to take first and where to build a buffer toward the 45-point total.

Third, your coach writes a week-by-week plan. It includes sessions, practice sets and checkpoints. Fourth, you take a practice test before booking each real subtest. When your practice score is comfortably above your target, you schedule the real one.

This method turns one big goal into five smaller ones. As a result, progress feels steady and visible. You can compare plan tiers on our pricing page or browse all exam prep services.

A Sample Week of HiSET Coaching

Here is a realistic week for an adult preparing for HiSET Math. This example assumes a Guided plan with an extra tutor hour or two added. On Monday evening, you meet your coach for an hour. You review percentages and ratios using everyday examples like sales tax and recipes.

On Wednesday, you move to linear equations. Your coach shows you how to turn a word problem into an equation. Then you solve several together. Next, you try a few on your own.

On Saturday, you complete a 30-minute practice set. Your coach reviews it before your next session. Consequently, every session begins by fixing last week's mistakes. That steady cycle builds real confidence.

Common HiSET Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

First, many adults forget about the 45-point total. They aim for exactly 8 everywhere. However, that falls short. Therefore, plan for higher scores in your strongest subjects.

Second, students neglect the essay. A score below 2 can block you even if your multiple-choice score is strong. Our coaches make sure you practice at least several full essays with feedback.

Third, students try to memorize science and social studies facts. Yet those subtests mostly test reading and reasoning. Focus on interpreting charts and passages instead.

Finally, students wait too long between subtests. Momentum matters. Once you pass one, start preparing for the next right away. In fact, adults who keep a steady pace usually finish much sooner.

Tips for Adults Preparing for the HiSET

Studying as an adult has real advantages. You bring life experience, focus and clear goals. Use them. For instance, connect math problems to your budget or your job. Those links make ideas stick.

Study in short blocks of 20 to 30 minutes. Keep a simple notebook of mistakes and review it weekly. Additionally, tell the people around you about your goal. Support from family and coworkers helps on tough weeks.

Most importantly, ask questions early. If something is unclear, tell your coach right away. The students who ask the most questions usually progress the fastest.

HiSET on Computer or on Paper

Depending on your state and testing center, you may take the HiSET on a computer or on paper. Some states also allow remote testing from home under specific rules. Each format has its own feel. Therefore, it helps to practice in the format you will actually use.

On the computer, you will click answers, flag questions and type your essay. Typing speed matters for the essay. So, if you rarely type, practice a little each day. On paper, you will fill in answer bubbles and handwrite the essay. In that case, neat handwriting and good time management matter more.

Your coach will ask which format you plan to use. Then they shape your practice to match. For example, computer-based students practice typed essays with a timer. Meanwhile, paper-based students practice handwritten essays and bubble sheets. Either way, the content and passing rules stay the same.

How to Choose the Right HiSET Coach

The right coach can save you weeks. So, what should you look for? First, choose someone who knows the HiSET specifically. The format and scoring differ from the GED. A coach who treats them as the same test may steer you wrong.

Second, look for experience with adult learners. Adults learn best with practical examples and clear goals. They also need flexible scheduling. Our coaches work with adults every day, so they understand both.

Third, ask how progress is tracked. A good coach records your practice scores for each subtest. Then they compare those scores to the passing rules, including the 45-point total. As a result, you always know where you stand.

Finally, look for honesty. A good coach will not promise a score. Instead, they will tell you when you are ready to test and when you need another week. You can read how we approach this in our academic integrity policy.

Using Your HiSET for Work, College or the Military

Your goal shapes your plan. For example, if you need the credential for a job offer, speed matters most. Therefore, we focus on passing every subtest efficiently. On the other hand, if you plan to start college, stronger math and writing scores help you avoid remedial classes.

Similarly, if you plan to enlist, recruiters may look at more than your credential alone. Many applicants also take an aptitude test. Strong reading and math skills from HiSET prep carry over directly. Consequently, the work you do now pays off twice.

Tell your coach your goal on day one. That way, your plan supports the next step, not just the test.

What Comes After the HiSET?

Your credential opens new options. Many adults head to community college next. If you plan to enter nursing, our ATI TEAS 7 tutoring guide and our HESI A2 tutoring guide explain the entrance exams you may face.

Others move into licensed trades. For example, our CDL test prep and real estate license prep build on the reading and math skills you develop now. Furthermore, if you start college classes, our college exam tutoring guides can help you succeed in your first courses.

What score do I need to pass the HiSET?

There are five subtests: Language Arts Reading, Language Arts Writing, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies. You can usually take them separately.
