On the HESI A2, math and science are where most applicants win or lose their nursing school seat. Reading and grammar often come more naturally. However, a few weak spots in conversions or anatomy can pull a section score below your program's cutoff. A focused HESI A2 math tutor or science tutor fixes those weak spots fast. At Prep Exams, we coach nursing applicants in Milwaukee, Phoenix, San Antonio and every other US city. Moreover, every session is live and online.
This guide goes deep on the HESI A2 math and science sections: what they cover, where applicants lose points and how tutoring helps. It also covers our seven services and answers to common questions at the end. For the whole exam, including reading, vocabulary and grammar, read our HESI A2 tutoring guide and see our HESI A2 prep plans.
What the HESI A2 Math Section Covers
The math section tests the arithmetic nurses use every day. You will see whole numbers, fractions, decimals, ratios and proportions, and percentages. You will also convert between units, especially household and metric measures. In addition, many versions include basic algebra, Roman numerals and military time.
Word problems are common. Many look like simple dosage calculations. For example, a question might ask how many milliliters to give when a medication comes in a certain concentration. These problems test setup more than difficult math.
Because nursing programs often require high section scores, small errors matter. Therefore, accuracy is as important as knowledge.
What the HESI A2 Science Sections Cover
Your program chooses which science sections you take. Anatomy and physiology is the most common. It covers body systems, structures and functions. Biology covers cells, genetics, metabolism and basic biological molecules. Chemistry covers atomic structure, the periodic table, bonding, reactions and basic stoichiometry. Some programs also require physics, covering motion, forces, energy and simple machines.
Because sections vary by school, start by confirming your list. Then your tutor plans only for those sections. Consequently, you never waste time on content your program does not test.
Why Applicants Lose Points in Math and Science
In math, most lost points come from small errors. Students misplace a decimal, forget a conversion factor or round too early. Others rush word problems and set them up incorrectly.
In science, the challenge is breadth. A&P alone covers a dozen body systems. Moreover, many applicants took biology or chemistry years ago. Consequently, they know some topics well and others barely at all. A diagnostic test reveals exactly which ones need work.
Our HESI A2 Math and Science Tutoring Services
We offer seven services. Each starts with a diagnostic on your program's required sections.
1. HESI A2 Math Foundations
This service rebuilds the basics: fractions, decimals, percentages, ratios and order of operations. Many adult applicants have not done this math in years. That is completely normal.
Your tutor starts where you are and moves quickly. For instance, you will convert between fractions, decimals and percentages until it feels automatic. Applicants in Milwaukee and Wichita often start here.
2. Conversions and Dosage-Style Word Problems
Conversions are a favorite HESI topic. You will move between metric units and household measures such as teaspoons, tablespoons, cups and ounces. Then you apply conversions in word problems.
Your tutor teaches dimensional analysis, a step-by-step method that keeps units straight. With it, even long problems become routine. Moreover, this method is exactly what you will use for dosage calculations in nursing school. Applicants in San Antonio and Corpus Christi book this focus often.
3. Algebra, Roman Numerals and Military Time
Algebra questions on the HESI are usually simple equations and proportions. Roman numerals and military time also appear in many versions. These items are easy points once you practice them.
Your tutor gives you quick drills for each. For example, you will convert 1630 to 4:30 p.m. and back again in seconds. As a result, these questions become fast, reliable points. Applicants in Fresno and Bakersfield choose this service frequently.
4. HESI A2 Anatomy and Physiology Tutoring
A&P is the science section most programs require. Your tutor reviews each body system with labeled diagrams and simple explanations. Then you practice HESI-style questions.
Moreover, your tutor highlights high-yield topics, such as the heart, lungs, kidneys, nervous system and endocrine glands. Applicants in Phoenix and Mesa book A&P help most often. For college-level A&P support, see our anatomy and physiology tutor guide.
5. HESI A2 Biology Review
Biology covers cells, organelles, cell division, genetics, DNA and protein synthesis, and basic metabolism. Many applicants find genetics and cellular respiration the trickiest.
Your tutor uses diagrams and Punnett squares to make these topics concrete. Additionally, you practice short question sets after each topic. Applicants in Columbus and Detroit often choose this service.
6. HESI A2 Chemistry Help
Chemistry often worries applicants the most. Topics include atomic structure, the periodic table, chemical bonds, balancing equations, pH, and basic reactions. Some versions include simple stoichiometry.
Your tutor focuses on concepts the HESI actually tests, not a full college chemistry course. For example, you will learn to balance equations with a simple method and read the periodic table for key patterns. Applicants in Miami and Chicago frequently book chemistry help. For deeper chemistry, see our organic chemistry exam tutor guide.
7. HESI A2 Physics and Fast-Track Prep
If your program requires physics, your tutor covers motion, forces, energy, waves and simple machines with clear formulas and examples. Meanwhile, applicants with test dates coming up soon can choose a fast-track plan that targets the sections and topics with the biggest gains.
Fast-track applicants usually choose our Intensive plan, with daily check-ins. Short timelines carry an urgency surcharge, shown before you pay. Applicants in Las Vegas and Nashville often choose it.

How We Build Your HESI Math and Science Plan
First, share your program's required sections and minimum scores. Second, take a diagnostic on just those sections. Third, your tutor builds a weekly plan that targets your weakest topics first.
Then you take timed practice sections every week or two, and the plan adjusts. Compare plan tiers on our pricing page.
Math Habits That Prevent Lost Points
Write every step, every time. Mental shortcuts cause most errors. Next, keep units attached to every number. If units do not cancel correctly, the setup is wrong. Moreover, estimate before calculating, so obviously wrong answers stand out.
Finally, round only at the end, and only as the question instructs. Early rounding changes final answers more often than students expect.
Science Study Methods That Work
Use active recall. Cover the labels on diagrams and name each structure. Then check yourself. Build comparison tables, such as arteries versus veins or mitosis versus meiosis. In addition, connect each fact to a function or a patient example. In fact, linking structure to function is the fastest way to remember A&P.
A Sample Week of HESI Math and Science Prep
This example assumes a Guided plan with an extra tutor hour added. On Monday, you review conversions and dosage-style problems with your tutor. On Tuesday, you complete 30 timed math questions on your own.
On Wednesday, you study the cardiovascular and respiratory systems with your tutor. On Thursday, you practice biology or chemistry questions. On Saturday, you take a timed practice section. Then on Sunday, you rest.
Common Mistakes on HESI Math and Science
First, applicants study the wrong sections. Always confirm your list. Second, they memorize conversion tables without practicing word problems. Third, they skip chemistry because it feels intimidating, even though basic topics are very learnable.
Finally, they take only one practice test. One test is a snapshot; several show a trend. Therefore, schedule at least two or three timed practice sections in the final weeks, and review every miss before taking the next one.
When to Start HESI A2 Prep
Most applicants start four to six weeks before their scheduled test date. Start earlier if your program is competitive or you have been out of school for a while. Your diagnostic will show how much time you need.
What to Bring to Your First Session
Bring your program's required sections and cutoffs, your test date and any previous HESI score report you have. Also note which topics feel weakest. Your tutor starts there.
A Worked Example: Setting Up a Dosage-Style Problem
Here is the kind of problem the HESI math section likes. A medication is available as 250 milligrams in 5 milliliters. The order is 500 milligrams. How many milliliters should be given?
First, write what you have and what you want. You have 250 mg per 5 mL. You want 500 mg. Next, set up the proportion so units cancel: 500 mg times 5 mL divided by 250 mg. The milligrams cancel, leaving milliliters. Then calculate: 2,500 divided by 250 equals 10. So, the answer is 10 mL.
Notice that the math is simple. The skill is the setup. That is why your tutor drills setup with dimensional analysis until it becomes automatic. Consequently, longer problems with extra conversion steps feel just as manageable.
High-Yield A&P Topics for the HESI
Some A&P topics appear again and again. The cardiovascular system, including blood flow through the heart, is one. The respiratory system and gas exchange is another. The nervous system, the endocrine glands and their hormones, and the urinary system round out the list.
Your tutor builds a one-page summary for each. For example, the endocrine summary lists each gland, its main hormones and their effects. Then you quiz yourself until the page is memorized. Additionally, you practice questions that link structure to function, which is how the HESI usually asks them.
Chemistry Without the Fear
Many applicants avoid chemistry because a past class went badly. However, HESI chemistry focuses on core ideas. You need to understand atoms, the periodic table, bonds, basic reactions, acids and bases, and simple calculations. You do not need a full college course.
Your tutor starts with the periodic table, because many answers can be read from it. For instance, the number of valence electrons often predicts bonding. Next, you practice balancing equations with a simple counting method. Most applicants find chemistry far more approachable than they expected.
Returning to Math and Science as an Adult
Many HESI applicants are career changers, parents or healthcare workers returning to school. Years away from math and science is normal. Your tutor starts with the basics and builds steadily. In fact, adult learners often progress quickly because they bring focus and clear goals. Short daily practice, even 20 minutes, makes a real difference over a few weeks.
Test-Day Tips for Math and Science
Arrive early and bring the identification your testing site requires. During math, write each step on your scratch paper, even for easy questions. That habit catches errors before you submit. Moreover, if a question stalls you, mark it and move on, then return if time allows.
During science, read every answer choice before selecting one. Many wrong answers are almost right. For example, a choice may name the correct organ but the wrong function. Slowing down slightly on the reading prevents those losses. Additionally, use any allowed breaks to reset your focus, especially if you take several sections in one sitting.
If You Need to Retake the HESI A2
Many programs allow a retake after a waiting period, and some limit the number of attempts. Check your school's policy first. Then start your retake plan with your previous score report. It shows which sections fell short.
Your tutor targets those sections from the first week, while keeping your stronger sections fresh with short weekly drills. Moreover, you change how you study, not just how much. For instance, if you studied only from flashcards before, you will add timed practice and worked problems this time. As a result, the second attempt builds on the first rather than repeating it.
Balancing HESI Prep With Work and Family
Many applicants already work in healthcare as CNAs or medical assistants. Others care for children or work long shifts. Therefore, plan short daily sessions on workdays and longer blocks on days off. Tell your tutor your schedule, and your plan will fit around it.
How Online HESI Tutoring Works
You join a live video session from your laptop or tablet. For math, you solve problems on a shared whiteboard while your tutor watches each step. For science, your tutor shares labeled diagrams, hides the labels and quizzes you. Between sessions, you complete short timed drills, and you can message quick questions whenever you get stuck.
Choosing the Right HESI A2 Tutor
Look for a tutor with nursing or health science experience who knows the HESI A2 format. Next, ask how they track progress by section. Finally, choose someone who is patient with returning adult learners. You should feel comfortable asking the same question twice. That comfort is often what turns a weak section into a strong one.
Beyond the HESI A2
Once you are accepted, the same math becomes dosage calculation and the same science becomes pathophysiology. Our nursing school exam tutoring guide covers those courses. If your program uses the TEAS instead, read our ATI TEAS 7 tutor guide.
