GED Requirements in Florida: Age, Underage Testing, Cost and Retakes

A plain-English guide to Florida GED rules: age, underage testing for 16- and 17-year-olds, addresses and ID, costs, retakes and how to earn your diploma.

The main GED requirements in Florida depend on your age. Adults register through GED.com with a valid ID and a Florida address, while 16- and 17-year-olds must complete an extra process before they can schedule a test. To earn your State of Florida High School Diploma, you must score at least 145 on each of the four subjects.

This guide uses Florida's state rule and the Florida page on GED.com. Check those sources before you register, since details can change.

Age Requirements

Adults 18 and older can register without an underage form. If you are 16 or 17, you can still test, but you must follow Florida's underage process.

Florida's Underage Testing Rules

Under Florida's rule, which has applied since November 1, 2024, 16- and 17-year-olds must:

  • End their school enrollment before taking the test. This includes filing a formal declaration of intent to terminate enrollment.
  • Have a parent or legal guardian complete a signed, notarized Underage Testing Form (FGED-01).
  • Send that form and proof of school withdrawal to the state's GED age waiver office before scheduling any test.

GED will tell you when you are cleared to test. Follow these steps carefully. The rule says that scores and diplomas earned by anyone under 18 who did not follow it are invalid.

Leaving school is a major decision, so talk to a parent, a school counselor or your district's adult education office first. Your district may be able to explain the options available to you. You can find more information from the Florida Department of Education.

Residency, Address and ID

According to GED.com, Florida has no residency requirement, but you need a Florida address when you register. You also need a valid, government-issued ID.

If you passed some subjects in another state, Florida may be able to convert those scores, but you must provide proof of residency. The rule also requires at least one subject to be taken at an approved Florida testing center. Ask the state GED office before you plan around transferred scores.

How Much Does the GED Cost in Florida?

GED.com lists the test cost as $38. Confirm the current per-subject price when you schedule, since you will take four subjects. GED Ready practice tests cost extra.

Florida GED Retake Rules

GED.com lists these retake rules for testing centers:

  • Waiting period: There is no wait for your first two retakes. After three attempts at a subject, you must wait 60 days before trying again.
  • Limits: There is no yearly limit on attempts.
  • No-shows: Missing an appointment counts as an attempt, so reschedule early if you cannot make it.
  • Discounted retakes: You get one discounted retake for each subject you buy but do not pass, and you have 365 days to use it. GED Testing Service waives its $26 fee, but a $12 test center fee applies.

What You Need to Pass

Florida requires a minimum score of 145 on each of the four subjects. These are Reasoning Through Language Arts, Mathematical Reasoning, Science and Social Studies. You can take them one at a time, which lets you focus on one subject and build confidence as you go.
